A little bit about Antarctica

A journey to the end of the world

Isla Navarino

Puerto Williams

It's official since March 2019: Puerto Williams, located at Kap Hoorn on Isla Navarino, is the southernmost city in Chile. With its new title, the small town on the edge of the Beagle Channel can now boost tourism and rely on government infrastructure projects. The tiny "town" with about 2,300 inhabitants is surrounded by breathtaking nature and is a highlight especially for adventurers and trekking lovers. Moreover, it is a starting point for particularly beautiful hiking routes in the Dientes de Navarino.

Dientes de Navarino

The southernmost trekking at the end of the world lures with untouched nature: mountain ranges with old forests, beautiful lagoons and unique fauna. It's hard to spot other adventurers there, since the area is one of the most deserted ones- a real challenge for adrenaline junkies but full of magical moments.

For the planning of trekking excursions in this area, we recommend the period November to March: The temperatures are not too freezing, thus one will have a more enjoyable experience. We have to say that this trekking route requires a lot of experience. Therefore, hikers are accompanied at best by an experienced guide. In addition, high mountain equipment, waterproof trekking shoes, thermal clothing as well as a sleeping bag and tent for low temperatures should be packed or rented on site

You are probably wondering how to get to this abandoned area. There are two options: On the one hand, the airline Aerovías flies daily from Punta Arenas. The flight takes about 1h. On the other hand one can also take the ferry from Punta Arenas, which is operated once a week and takes about 32 hours. Moreover you can arrive via Ushuaia.

Accommodation

Sleeping somewhere at the end of the world has a very special charm. Lakutaia Lodge is a beautiful hotel in a unique location and a great place to stay. Excellent food and fantastic tours, e.g. Trekking tours, Antarctic visits, fishing etc. are waiting for the visitors. Families are also more than welcome. The Errante Lodge is surrounded by mountains, rivers and the ocean amid unspoiled nature. The ecologically-oriented hotel offers excursions to unexplored nature and is perfect for adventurers.

Antarctica

Even further south one will only find Antarctica. An expedition into eternal ice is possible and a very special highlight. Flights to the Antarctic Peninsula are an option both as scheduled flights and as charter flights with Aerovías DAP. In addition, the so-called air cruises can be an interesting opportunity: The combination of air and cruise trips ensures that one simply flies by plane over the dreaded Drake Passage on their way to Antarctica. Thus, guests can spend more time in the Antarctic, which is explored by boat. There one will have the opportunity to visit different bases of the different countries, among others e.g. the Great Wall Station of China, Free Station of Chile, the Russian Bellingshausen Station and the Artigas Station of Uruguay.

Antarctica overnight

The program of Aerovías DAP is aimed at those who want to experience the pure white and icy continent. The sunset in one of the most spectacular places in the world is a special highlight. Moreover, one has the option to extend the full-day excursion with an overnight stay in an Antarctic camp, sleeping next to the breathtaking Collins Glacier.

Cruise through Antarctica

Travelling between the southern Shetland Islands and the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula and exploring different places that offer the best possible overview of the varied Antarctic environment - a fantastic experience. There are ice-filled fjords and spectacular icebergs, here and there one can spot seabirds, penguins, seals and whales. Antarctica21 offers various programs for a unique Antarctic adventure.
